That's what the viewer will ask after taking a closer look at the ominous scene. Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a 19th-century Dutch painter, most of his works concerned the ancient world. The faces look confused and questioning out between the blossoms. In this sea of blossoms, other guests of the feast can be seen, some already almost completely submerged in the pink waves (left), some only lightly sprinkled (right). He was highly renown in the 19th century and one of the wealthiest painters. ![]() The foreground of the picture is literally flooded by a wave of pink rose blossoms. Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema was a classical subject painter, who became known for his representation of the Roman Empire and admired for his Classical antiquity. Adding to the authentic antique effect - which Alma-Tadema took extremely seriously - is the statue of Dionysus in the background and the woman entertaining the guests by playing an antique double flute (auloi). The young ruler is dressed in high-quality golden robes and his head is crowned with a matching tiara. The titular emperor can be seen at the left edge of the group. Interested and joyfully excited, they all look at the events in the foreground. On a somewhat elevated platform surrounded by columns, against a clear blue sky in the background of the picture, one sees a group of wealthy Romans typically dining while reclining. ![]()
